Seed and Flower Planting Activities for Children
On 9th May the Project was at the Sue Godfrey Nature Park Fete 2026 for an afternoon of seed and flower planting activities aimed at children.
The Deptford Ragged School's annual Children’s Flower Show began in 1880. It was very popular in the neighbourhood and was a highlight in the school calendar.
Plant pots, seedlings, and packets of seeds were given to the children, who took them away and grew their plants for the show. The plants were then judged, and prizes awarded.
We planned to recreate a Ragged School flower show as part of our Community Heritage Festival, and this event was an opportunity for locals to get involved!
More than 50 people came along, planted a flower and a seed, and took them away to grow them on, and bring them back to the flower show at the Heritage Festival!
Educating Deptford: the Deptford Ragged School and its Place in the Community is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
